I’m busy. Most people are busy.
I don’t have time to shop around for the various bits and bobs for my marathon endeavours so I thought I’d share how I cover ALL my bases in one trip to tesco.
So here is what is on the list for before/during/after the marathon.
- Protein (optional)
I always stir in some protein powder to my porridge at home, so don’t see the point in changing my routine on race day! After I have had my morning coffee and flushed through the system (TMI?), I take an immodium to ensure I don’t have any shitty disasters on the way round. Running gets the bowels moving for me and I could really do without the joys of sitting in a portaloo halfway round.
- Flapjack / cereal bar
- Jelly babies
- SIS Go Hydro tabs
Energy gels (YES and shot blocks too) make me feel really sick and I prefer to take some “real food” with me because I’ll a) enjoy eating it more and b) be able to stomach it better! The ibuprofen and paracetamol are probably not my best advice but I feel a sort of peace of mind carrying them with me. As for the SIS Go Hydro tabs, I didn’t actually drink any plain water on route in Amsterdam, only electrolyte fuelled drinks, and I think this helped!
- Diet Coke
- Wet Ones
- Calf Compression (optional)
Diet Coke is a real comfort blanket for me, and racing round a mara knowing I’ve got one waiting for me at the end makes a big difference for me in the last 10km. Wet ones are there because I never know how long it’ll take me to get from finish line to shower. Admittedly the calf compression shouldn’t have made the photo or the list, since I didn’t get these in tesco with my one-stop-shop.. BUT having said that, some long socks should also fair pretty well.
Do comment anything glaringly obvious that I am (certain) to have forgotten.
